For my 3rd Year (2010/11) project I developed a Bluetooth Heart Monitor.
This was when wearables were just starting. Polar had announced they would be releasing a wearable Bluetooth chest strap monitor in 2011. The technology was there but it had yet to be turned into products. The first Smartwatchs didn't appear until 2013.
The system consisted of a Bluetooth Arduino that streamed data onto an Android phone which live plotted the data and also uploaded it to a server. The server also provided a live graph of the data. I did a live demo of this for my assessed presentation which worked fine much to the surprise of the academics.
